Did AI destroy this Hospital in Jamaica or was it Hurricane Melissa?
This photo stopped me mid-scroll — a crumbled hospital in Jamaica, said to be wiped out by Hurricane Melissa. Viral photos like this one of a destroyed Jamaican hospital during Hurricane Melissa 2025 spread fast on social media. It looked real. The kind of image that makes your stomach drop and your fingers move to hit “share.” But something about it felt off. So I did what most people don’t: I started checking. Clearly you aren’t most people because here you are, checking things out too. Hopefully I can spare you a bit of time, but of course, I welcome your fact checking!
The Find: What made you stop and say “wait a second…”
The Viral Hospital Photo That Started It All
The news is fully of incredibly images and stories about the weather. Not all of it is real though, we know this. In fact, many AI-generated disaster images have fooled thousands this year. I wasn’t shocked when this image showed up on Facebook with the title: BREAKING: HOSPITALS IN JAMAICA HAVE BEEN WIPED OUT. First Responders are calling the situation “beyond critical.”
The title is believable as indeed Hurricane Melissa is horrific and it has done so much damage to Jamaica, but something isn’t right….
The Clues: What looked off, what triggered your suspicion?
First, it is a news story, those we must pay extra attention to I think when trying to figure out if an image is AI or real – A key question in modern fact-checking.
Second, the timing…. This was one of the first images out there. AI images often appear early during breaking news events, before official photos are released.
Third, the image itself is amazing but something wasn’t right. Of course the hurricane itself isn’t right but beyond the shock value the thing that caught my attention can be seen on the left of the image, near the back. Notice the buildings there are what look like untouched roofs? The hurricane swept the whole island, why were those buildings special?
What Made Me Stop and Question the Image

So is this image of the supposed hospital in Jamacia during Hurricane Melissa real or not? The majority of AI checkers I used think it is fake but….
Let think about some other things.
- We can’t find who took the photographer of the photo.
- Some think it was take by drone given the elevation of the photo but no drone can fly in those hurricane winds, at least not commercially available ones.
So this got me to wondering what google has to say about what this building looks like, if it is even real. When fact-checking viral images, a quick reverse image search on Google or Maps can reveal a lot. Turns out the Black Water Health Center is a one story building and the Facebook Hurricane Melissa Jamaica Hospital photo is clearly a 2 story building. But maybe I was looking at the wrong building.
Verifying the Real Buildings in Jamaica

I continued the investigation searching for other medical buildings, what popped up wasn’t something listed as a medical center but actually Black River Hospital in Jamaica, this was promising when I noticed that it is at least a 2 story building!

The roof colors are off though, however in the facebook image that says it shows a black water hospital the roof wasn’t exactly there….
I then checked the top map view of the Black Water Hospital to see if it is the same building as in the viral facebook photo. What do you think?

The Verdict: Real or AI?
So… Real or AI? My Verdict
After collecting a lot of information, much more than I have recorded here, I feel confident in saying that the facebook post about the Hurricane Melissa Black Water Hospital being is fake.
The majority of AI detectors identified the image as AI-generated, and no matching real-world building exists. This confirms it’s part of the growing wave of AI misinformation surrounding disasters.
In the end, there is no vantage point of an actual building that can be found to support the view in the image. This combined with the AI checkers makes me believe that it is in fact a fake.
Hurricane Melissa Didn’t Destroy This Hospital — AI Did.
Final Thoughts: Why this matters or what to watch out for next time.
There is so much devastation in Jamaica right now because of Hurricane Melissa, and there are real hospitals that have been destroyed. It is important when consuming news that we make sure our attention goes to real events and places and people. Fake AI images of disasters can draw attention and donations away from genuine crises.
It is too easy for con-artists to create AI posts like this one to swindle good and caring people. Please be careful with what you believe and remember, I can always be wrong, just like you!
Stay skeptical, stay curious, and when in doubt — check if it’s AI Real or Not.
